The Pen Tool is an incredibly useful but equally frustrating tool to use for beginners in Adobe Illustrator. On the whole, Adobe Illustrator is used for making drawings, where Adobe Photoshop is for manipulating photos. Most of the drawings that you will create in this class are going to be done in Adobe Illustrator.
There are two ways to draw lines in Illustrator. The pencil tool and the pen tool. When you use the pencil tool, you create lines. Pretty straight forward. However, those lines, even if they "connect" or overlap, they are not considered a shape that you could fill with a color. This is where the pen tool comes in. It also draws lines, but if you connect your lines together with the intention to make a shape, it actually does it! Technically, they are not called lines in Illustrator, the lines you make are called "paths".
